A visual workflow builder that transforms complex data collection into an intuitive drag-and-drop experience.

Workflow Builder

Overview

What is it?

Workflow Builder is a visual tool designed to help enterprise teams create, manage, and optimize data collection workflows without writing code. The platform enables users to design complex multi-step processes through an intuitive drag-and-drop interface.

Why did we build it?

Enterprise teams were spending weeks configuring data collection workflows through XML and JSON files, leading to errors, delays, and dependency on technical teams. We needed a solution that would democratize workflow creation while maintaining enterprise-grade reliability.

Who is it for?

Built for enterprise data teams, operations managers, and business analysts who need to create sophisticated workflows without technical expertise.

Key Features

Visual Workflow Designer

Visual Workflow Designer

Drag-and-drop interface for creating complex workflows with conditional logic, parallel execution, and error handling. Features real-time validation and auto-save.

Template Library

Template Library

Pre-built workflow templates for common use cases, fully customizable and shareable across teams. Reduces setup time from weeks to minutes.

Real-time Collaboration

Real-time Collaboration

Multiple team members can edit workflows simultaneously with conflict resolution, comments, and version history. See who's working on what in real-time.

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge 01

The Problem

Complex State Management: Managing the state of hundreds of interconnected nodes while maintaining performance was a significant challenge. Each node could have dependencies on multiple other nodes.

The Solution

Implemented a graph-based state management system using Zustand with immer for immutable updates. Created a custom reconciliation algorithm that only re-renders affected subtrees.

The Result

Reduced re-renders by 85% and maintained 60fps performance even with 200+ node workflows.

Challenge 02

The Problem

Real-time Collaboration Conflicts: When multiple users edited the same workflow simultaneously, we needed to prevent data loss while maintaining a seamless experience.

The Solution

Built an operational transformation (OT) system similar to Google Docs, with conflict-free replicated data types (CRDTs) for node positions and a last-write-wins strategy for properties with visual conflict indicators.

The Result

Zero data loss in 6 months of production use with teams of up to 15 simultaneous editors.

Challenge 03

The Problem

Performance with Large Datasets: Workflows needed to process millions of records, but the UI would freeze when visualizing execution progress.

The Solution

Implemented virtual scrolling for large node lists, moved heavy computations to Web Workers, and added a smart batching system that aggregates progress updates every 100ms instead of real-time.

The Result

UI remained responsive at 60fps while processing 5M+ records, down from 2-3 second freezes.

Architecture

The system follows a microservices architecture with a React frontend, Node.js API gateway, and specialized services for workflow execution, real-time collaboration, and data processing. Redis handles real-time updates and caching, while PostgreSQL stores workflow definitions and execution history. The workflow engine runs in isolated Docker containers for security and scalability.

The Workflow Builder transformed how our enterprise clients approach data collection. Non-technical team members can now create and deploy sophisticated workflows independently, reducing the backlog on engineering teams and accelerating time-to-market for new data initiatives.

My Role

Lead Full-Stack Engineer: Architected the workflow engine, built the real-time collaboration system, and led a team of 3 engineers. Responsible for technical decisions, code reviews, and production deployment.
